How to Choose the Right CPU for Your Build
The CPU is the brain of your PC, and picking the right one can feel like a minefield. Here’s how to cut through the noise and choose the chip that actually makes sense for what you need.
What are you using your PC for?
This is the first question to ask. Gaming and content creation have different demands. Gaming leans heavily on your graphics card, so you don’t always need the most expensive CPU to get great results. Video editing, streaming, and 3D rendering are much more CPU-intensive, so spending more on your processor makes sense if that’s what you’re doing.
Cores and clock speed — what matters more?
Clock speed is how fast each core runs. More cores means the CPU can handle more tasks at the same time. For gaming, a fast clock speed matters more than having lots of cores — most games don’t use more than 8 cores effectively. For creative workloads, more cores will serve you better. A processor like the Intel Core i9-14900K gives you both — 24 cores and speeds up to 6.0GHz — making it a strong choice whether you’re gaming, streaming, or editing.
Don’t forget the platform
Your CPU choice determines your motherboard socket and memory type. Intel’s 12th, 13th, and 14th Gen chips all use the LGA 1700 socket and are compatible with DDR5 memory on Z790 boards. Make sure everything on your shopping list is compatible before you buy.
Our advice
For most gamers, a mid-range CPU paired with a strong GPU is the best use of your budget. If you do creative work on the side, step up to a higher core count processor and you’ll notice the difference in export times and multitasking. Don’t overspend on a CPU at the expense of your graphics card if gaming is your main use.
